Bored Kids? Grow Mushrooms!
The kids are home from school, the novelty of summer break has worn off, and you're officially out of ideas.
If you're looking for a fun, educational, and (surprisingly) mess-free activity, growing mushrooms at home might be just the thing.
Last summer, I tried two of Back to the Roots' Organic Mushroom Grow Kits, and they were way more fun and easier than I expected. Here's how they went!

Pearl Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit
My pearl oyster mushroom grow kit was a success. Even though it advertises to be ready to harvest in 10 days, the pearl oyster mushrooms were pretty big by Day 5 and full-grown on Day 8.
Granted, it started growing in the box before receiving it, so it had a head start against my other kit.
I made pasta with it, which was scrumptious and easy to cook.

Golden Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit
My golden oyster mushroom grow kit had some catching up to do. These pictures were taken a day apart. They grew very quickly. I started having a decent amount of mushrooms on Day 7, which were full-grown on Day 9.
The yellow coloring isn't a filter. They were a gorgeous golden color on Day 8, but the color started fading on Day 9. They were still yellowish when I harvested them, but they weren't as pretty as before.
The mushrooms ended up being tasty in pasta as expected.

Mushroom Kit: Hit or Miss?
The Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Grow Kits turned out to be a surprisingly fun and educational project.
They were easy to use, didnโt make a mess, and watching the mushrooms grow almost overnight was honestly kind of magical.
If you're looking for a screen-free activity this summer or during a school break (that ends with dinner ingredients), I definitely recommend giving any of these kits a try.

For all the parents looking for educational materials to supplement the kits, I have your back. The Mushroom Grow Kit is Unit 1 of their free online curriculum.
Ciao for now!
